Skincare for the Night

Nighttime Skincare 1.jpgNighttime Skincare 2.jpg

Under the shine of the moon, my skincare routine transforms from light and fun to heavy-duty critical. Products become thicker, results become noticeable. As promised, I owe you all a look into the kaleidoscope I call my nighttime skin routine.

Recently, I took over Brydie Beauty’s Instagram account to spread the Our Second Skin nighttime skin regimen. As I was going live, I noticed questions pouring in and I wasn’t able to answer them all which (fast forward) is why I’m here.

Well, enough beating around the bush I’m just going to dive right in. If you don’t already know, I have dry-to-combo skin. It depends on seasons, but lately, my skin has been a little drier than usual so if you need some extra moisture for your skin, continue reading.

Dior Life Oil To Milk Cleanser

I have the full range of Dior cleansers and let me tell you they make them for all skin types. So if this one has too much moisture for your liking, try a different make — Oil to Milk, Lotion to Foam and Micellar Milk. They’ve basically got you covered on the skincare spectrum oily to dry to combo. As I said before, my skin has been on the dry side so the Oil to Milk cleanser has been a critical step in removing all my makeup and excess dirt at the end of the night. The almond oil activates once you massage it into the skin and add in some water. It’s incredible because there’s no oil residue or oily sensation on your skin once you’ve finished using it.

Chanel Hydra Beauty Essence Mist

I don’t even know where to start on this mist…It’s life-changing. I carry it with me everywhere, mist it before and after I apply makeup, before I go to bed and when I wake up. You can LITERALLY use it wherever, whenever. Just be prepared to get some looks while spritzing away on the subway.

Goop Perfecting Eye Cream

On the top of my list of favorite eye creams, you’ll find Gweneth Paltrow’s Goop Perfecting Eye Cream. Scratch that, you’ll find all of their products.  You can use this in the morning or night, I use it for both. Just apply a small amount (a little goes a long way), I’m super paranoid about wrinkles and fine lines if that doesn’t apply to you: Skip this step!!

Augustinus Bader The Rich Cream

The crème de la crème of Creams. Sometimes a bit of science and stem cell technology can be good especially when you have the help of an expert. The formula behind this cream intensely hydrates and replenishes the skin using Argan oil, Vitamin E, antioxidants and fatty acids. Let me tell you, once I got my hands on this cream, it eliminated the use of any extra products. Worth the price, if you’re looking for a simple routine use a cleanser + The Rich Cream at night and you will see a noticeable difference in your skin.

Tata Harper Beautifying Face Oil

If you have dull or rough skin this oil is perfect for you. When I don’t want to use a cream or lotion before bed, in lieu of the cream, Tata Harper’s products save my skin. An incredibly light-weight oil, could be the product you need to energize and revitalize your skin throughout the night.

The Captivator

This energizing mist doesn’t have anything to do much with my skincare routine, but more so for calming and relaxation purposes. Since mental health is one of the most toll-taking factors on your skin, I decided to throw this product in the mix. I kid you not, every night before I go to bed I spray relentlessly in the air and let the mist trickle onto my hair, my pillows and skin. The scent is an intoxicating mix of Sandalwood, Sage and Neroli. An instant sense of relaxation easily overwhelms you and puts you right to bed. This anxiety-reducing spray is worthy of taking up the most premier real estate on your bedside table.

That completes the Our Second Skin tried and true. Let us know your thoughts and if you’d like to learn more feel free to shoot the OSS team a message.

What Glossier’s Skin Solution Did For My Face.

skin solution.jpg

A couple of months ago, I received an email from Glossier’s team regarding a confidential, never-released-before product, asking if I wanted to test it out for four weeks prior to release. Naturally, I said yes, because who in their right mind wouldn’t want to try the cult-favorite beauty brand’s newest product? I was a little hesitant at first because, 1. My skin isn’t acne prone so I wondered if I should really be using something that might potentially trigger acne, and 2. The product is chemical based which meant it has acids in it which also freaked me out. Nevertheless I decided to run with it.

My initial thoughts when I received the package were obviously on packaging. Needless to say, the millennial in me wanted everything to post a photo on Instagram, but had to resist. Okay, no more on packaging, bottle etc. Let’s get down to business. My skin type is pretty dry, red patches, hyper pigmentation and all that jazz. The solution contains three acids Alpha Hydroxy (AHA), Beta Hydroxy (BHA) and Polyhydroxy (PHA), which are not to be intimidated by,  because in the long run these three acids will single handedly transform your skin routine.

Glossier Skin Solution (2).jpg

Week 1

My first reaction to the product was strong/intense smell, burning on face (this may just be because my virgin skin has never used any chemical acid-based products before). My face felt sticky after and not in a good hydrated,  “I need to wash this off of my face way”. But don’t get scared just yet. I hadn’t seen instant results the first week of using it but decided to keep the ball rolling.

Week 2

By the second week of using it, I had gotten used to the sensation on my skin and it actually felt really great. Since I started using the product during winter time, my skin was already really dry, so I complimented my solution with a deeply hydrating moisturizer after applying it to my skin with a cotton round. By week 2 I could already feel my skin getting cleaner, and redness fading away. The exfoliation was working.

Week 3

By week 3 I had decided this would continue to be a part of my skin regimen even after I was done testing it. Small breakouts would clear away from my skin almost immediately and I actually saw physical dead skin coming off my face. My skin texture felt softer than ever, the redness was reduced; my skin looked healthy and glowy.

Week 4

My standards for this product were proved wrong. I’m not sold on products that easily-my skin is very low maintenance (god bless) and using intense skincare products disturbs my routine. But I have to say, the solution showed physical results. My blemishes were zero to minimal, my skin was actually glowing (so many of my followers were asking me what I was using but I couldn’t tell them) but alas here is my secret: Glossier’s Skin Solution. My skin is thanking you @glossier for allowing me to be a part of this journey. Hope this review helps, let me know if you try the product and what your thoughts are on it.

Summer Color Story

Summer is easily my least favorite season in terms of fashion. Wardrobe becomes stale; minimal effort and monotonous looks become the norm. Differentiation gets pushed to the back burner as everyone turns to their trusted summer go-to’s: cut off shorts, tanks, and tees. Steering away this dryness is pivotal. I always find myself asking the same things during the season: how to look distinctive while dressing comfortable and avoiding dying in the heat (cue easy breezy beautiful Covergirl).

While Summer has its disadvantages – heat and lackluster clothing come to mind – there is a positive takeaway. Color can finally rise to the place that it deserves. Summer and color are a perfect match. When you’re struggling to find anything worth getting excited about it in terms of style, turn towards the basics: color blocking and pairing as an accessory of its own.

I’m wearing a Loéil two piece I stumbled upon while scrolling my Instagram feed. As soon as I saw it I knew it had to be mine IRL. The color was bright, but not too bright, bold, but not too bold. Just perfect if you ask me. I purchased it of course no regrets here. What I admire most about the set is the silhouette, the drape and the flow. I decided to go the color blocking route and paired them with my newly bought pink pirate sandal by Céline from their Fall/Winter 17 collection.

Try a different approach to dressing up in the Summertime, even if it may seem unconventional to start pairing with colors. This is the Summer of color. Embrace it.

Untailored

DSC01311DSC01312DSC01303DSC01322DSC01325DSC01333DSC01338DSC01324

It wasn’t until recently, during fashion week that it truly dawned on me that my everyday go-to get up was actually one of fashion’s biggest trends. Almost every fashion influencer, editor, and blogger showed up to fashion shows wearing feminine tailored pieces coupled with cozy athleisure sneakers, track pants, t-shirts or hoodies. I realized that fashion might finally be accepting the fact that we are everyday people, who not only love looking fly as hell but also while embracing the possibility of comfort?

And I’m glad people are catching on because this trend is SO simple. The “untailored” look, as I like to call it, is all about mixing relaxed and effortless garments with polished, lady-like statement pieces. This look takes something tailored and eases the idea up; you can look chic while still giving off that downtown “don’t fuck with me” attitude. It all works! Key pieces to incorporate are blazers (bonus points if vintage), track pants (the brighter the colors the better), and trainers.

For my personal “untailored” look I turned to my Adidas track pants I wore in fifth grade. Yes, I said fifth grade. The lime green detail was so fitting I would choose these over modern day pants any day. Lime green happens to be one of my favorite colors (*drools over SS17 Balenciaga knife bootie*) if I can incorporate it within my wardrobe I take full advantage. I paired my track pants with a pair of classic black boots along with a black turtleneck. For my tailored factor I chose a black shoulder padded and double-breasted vintage blazer from my favorite new vintage shop in Brooklyn, The Break. If you haven’t been there I suggest you go ASAP! If you can incorporate any of these tips into your Spring wardrobe, you’ll be set.

Blazer: Vintage from The Break

Earrings: Vintage

Turtleneck: Uniqlo

Track Pants: Adidas

Urban Concrete

As some may or may not know, fashion trends often derive from ones surroundings. People tend to pick up inspiration from the world around them, unintentionally, and incorporate it in their fashion without even knowing.

This particular look was inspired by the city that surrounds me and makes me feel my finest, the concrete jungle. It is quite difficult to be uninspired by a city so great, with it’s deep cement gray tones, textured concrete walls and cobble stone roads. Not only is the place I call home the inspiration behind this look, but also an emerging influence within culture and art

My top is a collaboration piece by New York based contemporary artist KAWS and Uniqlo. Vest is from People’s Market, Denim is from Acne Studios and shoes are from Maison Margiela.

SPRAY ON NAIL POLISH

If you’re anything like me (which I hope not) you’d know I’m terrible at painting nails. Lucky for those of you who aren’t gifted in the nail department, things just got a whole lot easier!

We here at OSS are all jumping for joy over the new spray on nail polish can first introduced by Nails Inc. and now by the edgy makeup company, Milk. No one wants to spend hours painting coat after coat for the perfect manicure that’s going to eventually chip, causing an endless cycle. Just like spray paint all you have to do is spray the can of nail polish on your nails, it’s that EASY. This product applies so effortless, you can forever say goodbye to bubbles and streak marks that normal nail polish tend to leave.

The application processes is sweet and simple. After this entire process is done, all you have to do is wash the access spray off your hands and wah-lah you’ve got yourself some stylin’ nails.
